The Swiss in the Spanish Civil War

This documentary on the 600 Swiss nationals whovolunteered to fight against Franco in the Spanish Civil War is anantidote to the myth of the Swiss as a "neutral" people. Some 200 Swisslost their lives in the war. Richard Dindo interviews several of thesurvivors, interspersing their recollections of the war, their slaincomrades and the mood of revolutionary Barcelona with excerpts fromJoris Ivens' The Spanish Earth. While it is true that for many ofyesterday's radicals, a comfortable, middle-class life lay ahead, noneremained unaffected by the experience in Spain; many retain a highlypolitical consciousness and are able to link issues in that struggle tolater political movements.
