Sympathy for the Underdog
A sequel of sorts to Japan Organized Crime Boss, this Okinawan set piece reunites most of the stars of that film, as well as most of its plot line. Just out of jail (again), sunglasses-wearing crime boss Koji Tsuruta finds that gangster life in Yokohama has become a warped parody of polite bourgeois society, with the new yakuza groups now engaged in boring, orderly versions of crime. Gathering his old gang together, he heads to Okinawa. There, after knocking off a few soft locals, he finds himself on top, until-of course-a powerful Tokyo gang muscles in, setting the stage for one final, seemingly unwinnable battle. Cult hero/actor Noboru Ando pops up again as a sympathetic hoodlum, but the main star here is Okinawa itself, a vibrant jumble of war ruins, American influence, Japanese gangsters, and indigenous culture, each noisily fighting for Fukasaku's, and the viewer's, attentions.
