Tchuma-Tchato and Trinkets and Beads

A mannered documentary about a one-time hunter, now park ranger, in rural Mozambique who sets out at the end of the civil war to convince the poverty-stricken local population-including both former RENAMO members and their opponents in the army-of the importance of preserving wild game, and of "protecting" the natural environment in general. Flying in the face both of their own traditions of hunting and of herds of hippopotami eating their crops, and in spite of the resentment and suspicion of many, the wardens seem eventually to succeed in uniting the people behind the organization of "Tchuma-Tchato" ("Our Wealth").-I.B./L.T.
