Teatro Amazonas
Artist in PersonPhotographer Sharon Lockhart's Goshogoako first introduced her exquisite sense of composition and her fascination with the possibilities of the stationary camera and the long take. In her most recent film, she elaborates on that exploration. Teatro Amazonas is both the site (an ornate theater in Manaus, Brazil) and the concept of her film. As in her earlier work, here too she is concerned with ethnographic questions regarding the viewing of one culture by another. In many ways, Teatro Amazonas is about looking; we the audience view another audience, a distinctly "typical" Brazilian audience. That audience seems to be viewing us, but of course their moment of looking occurred in another time and place. As our gazes lock over that gap, we can ponder our expectations of both art and anthropology. The soundtrack is simply yet elegantly constructed; it includes a composition by Becky Allen performed by the Choral do Amazonas.-Kathy Geritz
