Tell It to the Marines
“This silly marine adventure tale seems better suited to the likes of Victor McLaglen or Wallace Beery than Chaney, but he pulls off the role of the hard-nosed drill sergeant so well, one forgets that this is supposed to be the legendary star of horror films! William Haines is the real lead as a young brat built into a man by the marines. Eleanor Boardman is lovely, but wasted, as the love interest. The film is entertaining, but certainly no classic, and it is an excellent example of the type of picture that gave MGM its reputation for gloss without any real substance. Still, it is fun if you don't take it too seriously, and it is one of the very few genuine straight roles in Chaney's MGM career.” Jon Mirsalis
