“Test Pilot Pirx is about 'finite nonlinears,' robots that...are intended, eventually, to replace human beings in space flights. Somewhat apprehensive about their usefulness to man, the United Nations sets up a space flight to determine their reactions to outer space and to the human beings who also make up the crew....Pirx is an intelligent film, examining an idea-the possible relationships, in the future, between humans and non-humans-that few other films have dared to do. It's also a film that's beautifully done, so well made that whether one is on the ground (parts were shot in New York City and on the Champs-Elysées in Paris) or up on the spaceship on the way to Saturn (the special effects, also well handled, were done in the Soviet Union), one never becomes conscious for one moment that one is anywhere else but where, in the film, one is supposed to be.”
