: As a film parable, few can beat this terse adaptation of Johannes V. Jensen's short story: two irresponsible youths speed-demoning toward their fate are at the center of Dreyer and cinematographer Jørgen Roos's dispassionate demonstration of cinematic panache, a virtually wordless exercise in the macabre made all the more bizarre for having been commissioned by the Danish government as a cautionary piece on reckless driving.
