The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse

Lang told Andrew Sarris that this, his last film, concerned the danger "that on the rubble of our civilization some realm of crime could be built up." It takes place at the Hotel Luxor, a Nazi relic honeycombed with hidden cameras and two–way mirrors. The hotel is haunted by the infamous Dr. Mabuse, who has escaped the grave and is now striking at those who are trying to expose him. Among those hunting him is the fat but wily Berlinese police commissioner Kras, played by Gert Fröbe-showing off the fine flair for gallows humor that made him unforgettable in the title role in Goldfinger. Speaking of 007, The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse anticipates the Bond series' gadgets and mysterious villains-not to mention the paranoid undertones of other walls–have–ears thrillers, from The President's Analyst to The Usual Suspects. (Mabuse, who has been known to take the alias Keyser Sosa, is still at large.)
