Three Daughters

Three Daughters (Teen Kanya) consists of three stories by Rabindranath Tagore: the first, The Postmaster, concerns a young man from Calcutta who is landed with a job in a remote village. He is looked after by a young orphan girl, and his eventual departure causes an unexpected tragedy; the second, The Conclusion, is a very funny anecdote involving a wild, tomboyish girl determined to go her own way; and the third, Monihara, which was cut from the film for reasons of length when it was released in the West, tells Tagore's supernatural story of a childless woman's infatuation with jewelry, and her return after death to her frightened husband. Although a much neglected work, it remains one of Ray's finest films.
