Three Daughters (Teen Kanya)

A trio of Tagore stories illustrating Satyajit Ray's narrative range, Three Daughters was cut to Two Daughters (and two sequences) for American release. The final sequence, “Monihara,” was excised and has still not been put back in prints in general distribution. In the complete Three Daughters which we will show, the first episode concerns a young man from Calcutta who is landed with a job in a remote village. He is looked after by a young orphan girl and his eventual departure causes an unexpected tragedy. The second sequence is an hilarious anecdote involving a wild, tomboyish girl determined to get her own way. The third, the rarely-seen “Monihara,” is a chilling study of a childless woman's infatuation with jewelry and her return after death to her frightened husband.
