Three Little Words

"By 1950, Vera-Ellen was a star--and dancing with Fred Astaire in this Technicolor biopic about pop composers Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby. Debbie Reynolds put in an appearance as Helen Kane, the 'Boop-Boop-A-Doop' girl (with her vocals dubbed by Kane herself), and Red Skelton was surprisingly strong opposite Astaire. But it was Vera-Ellen and Astaire (who seemed to be having the time of their lives working together) hoofing it to Hermes Pan's creative choreography, and a score featuring tunes like 'You Are My Lucky Star,' 'Who's Sorry Now' and 'Three Little Words' that made this one of the better period musicals. Vera-Ellen had never been more exciting than with Astaire, and his dancing seemed unusually confident and assured opposite her--surely the best partner he ever had." --Michael Goodwin
