Three Make a Pair

In the last year of his life Sacha Guitry directed two wonderfully sly and cynical comic mysteries-Lovers and Thieves from his wheelchair, Three Make a Pair from his sickbed, giving instructions to actor/producer Cl?ent Duhour. (This only reinforced his directorial presence and impressive control over every element.) Michel Simon stars as a police investigator whose wife takes him for a new Maigret. When a crime disrupts the making of a movie and the cameraman catches the whole thng on film, his job should be a simple one. But two suspects, identical twins, accuse one another, and a third look-alike may be involved. Guitry, in his last film appearance, opens with a typical line: "Of course I'm not in favor of murder, but after all, people have to live."
