Three World Premieres: Son of Oil, The Speech, Ñ plus A Tribute to Nam June Paik

Admission $2.50

Three World Premieres
features first showings of new work by three of the nation's leading video artists. Son of Oil (1982, 17 mins, color) by Tony Oursler combines expressionistic fantasy and “new image” painting with a satiric narrative dealing with the theme of alienation. In The Speech (1982, 5 mins, color) artist Doug Hall conveys the chilling presence that has caused his performance pieces to be called “among the strongest examples of the art form in America.” Tony Labat utilizes the theme of the newly-arrived immigrant and the vibrant visual style normally associated with painting to make Ñ (1982, 17 mins, color) his strongest work to date. Also on the program will be the Westcoast premiere of Kit Fitzgerald/John Sanborn's A Tribute to Nam June Paik (1982, 28 mins, color). Paik's ideas about television and his philosophic and comic style of persuasion are reflected in this personal and historic electronic tour of the man often referred to as the “George Washington of video.” Oursler and Labat will be present for the screenings.
