The Ticket of Leave Man

Tod Slaughter stars in a mystery in which the head of a Prisoners' Aid Society frames his rival for forgery. "A curio for detective eclectics! The Victorian play (made into a British silent and this sound remake) introduced the character, Hawkshaw the Detective-- and also brought a new word into detective fiction. (There were references to Hawkshaws long before there were Private Eyes.) Otherwise, it's a typically robust Tod Slaughter vehicle, played for burlesque--or virile melodramatics, depending on one's point of view." W.K.E.
