Tony Labat: Right Jab

Though acculturation and displacement still have their one-two punch, Labat's concerns with narrativity come to the fore in these works. In Lost in the Translation (1984, 8.5 mins, Color), the artist blocks out the faces of his performers to return them to the obscurity of the Other. La Jungla (Between Light and Shadow) (1985, 13 mins, B&W) contains a strange tale of love and indifference, told by a surveillance camera as its pans from left to right. Cultural identity finds alluring effacement in Mayami: Between Cut and Action (1986, 14 mins, Color) as Winston Tong alters his lids to mask his Asian eyes. Achromatic (1992, 16.5 mins, Color) is a chock-a-block story that entrances even as it subtly evades understanding.
