Too Many Husbands
“When it comes to love, Hollywood frequently favors the triangle over other geometric configurations, and for good reason. From melodrama to screwball comedy, love is only as interesting as the number of interested parties. In the merrily-paced Too Many Husbands, a bewildered but secretly delighted Jean Arthur finds herself courted by two legitimate spouses. Intent on winning their wife's heart (and estate), Fred McMurray (erroneously believed to be deceased) and his best friend and business partner, Melvyn Douglas plot and vie in a compellingly comic manner. Based on a Somerset Maugham play, the always funny and sometimes downright silly Too Many Husbands features terrific lead performances and excellent photography. Under the astutely-timed direction of Wesley Ruggles (an original Keystone Kop), this farcical escapade joined with The Philadelphia Story, His Girl Friday and My Favorite Wife to make 1940 screwball comedy's blue ribbon year.” Laura Thielen
