On The Town

"Based on Fancy Free, the ground-breaking ballet by Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein, On The Town was a triumphantly innovative Broadway musical featuring a top-notch score with music by Bernstein, and words and book by the brilliant Betty Comden and Adolph Green (whose future film triumphs would include Singin' In the Rain and The Bandwagon). Although the film version abandoned much of the original score, it was still a benchmark achievement in the film musical. Gene Kelly choreographed, Stanley Donen directed (both would repeat roles for Rain). And Vera-Ellen was totally magnificent as the irresistible 'Miss Turnstiles' Ivy Green, with at least three show-stopping numbers--the seemingly effortless, off-hand mastery of 'Main Street,' the stunning acrobatics of 'Miss Turnstiles Ballet,' and the heart-breaking balletics of 'A Day In New York Ballet' (which was so demanding, Kelly had to replace all the actors--except Vera-Ellen and himself--with trained dancers). Not to be missed!" --Michael Goodwin
