The Traveler

This year's Kurosawa Award-winner Kiarostami's rarely screened first feature, an affecting and unsentimental story of a youthful rebel, may remind viewers of François Truffaut's The 400 Blows, with which it shares a defiant blend of toughness and tenderness. The traveler of the title is Qassem, a budding delinquent and enterprising soccer fan who will do anything to get money to see his favorite soccer team play in Tehran. The Traveler contains the elements which have continued to characterize Kiarostami's work: improvised performances, documentary textures, real-life rhythms, and the subject matter of daily life all combined with an artist's eye and a poet's soul.
