Tribute to Alf Sjöberg
Few directors have so successfully intermingled theater and cinema as Swedish director Alf Sjöberg. His works display a continual alliance, sometimes unsettled, between the meticulous stylizations of the stage and the realism demanded by cinema. Like his illustrious countryman, Ingmar Bergman, Sjöberg was a man of the theater, having served as Artistic Director of the Royal Dramatic Theater. And, indeed, many of his greatest films were based on plays by the renowned August Strindberg. This six-film Tribute to Alf Sjöberg includes Road to Heaven, written by the Swedish playwright Rune Lindström, and Torment, featuring Bergman's first produced screenplay. This series, also part of Sweden '88, is made possible through the generous assistance of the Swedish Institute. PFA wishes to thank Peter Cowie, Swedish film scholar, for his research and program notes. All prints courtesy of the Swedish Institute, except where noted.
