Trick for Trick

A worthy follow-up to William Cameron Menzies's serial-like Chandu the Magician, Trick for Trick is a murder mystery unraveled as two master magicians (Ralph Morgan and Victor Jory) engage in one-upsmanship on a major scale. It is never quite explained how or why Morgan has set himself up as a kind of occult Lone Ranger, devoting his energies, his skills-and his special effects-to solving the problems of unfortunates, with no hint of recompense or indication as to from where his income derives. But it hardly matters: the sets and the illusions are magnificent, and the print itself, recently restored by The Museum of Modern Art, is a feat of magic in itself-a copy that looks as sharp and pristine as the original it came from. -William K. Everson
