THE TRILOGY I: ON THE RUN

In Belvaux's wonderful three-genre trilogy-from thriller to comedy to melodrama-the various stories take place at the same time, in the same town, Grenoble. Characters evolve and echo each other; the protagonists of one film become secondary characters in the others. Seeing the films in any order offers new revelations. On the Run, like the other films in the trilogy, is primarily concerned with the relationship of a couple. Ex-con Bruno (played by Belvaux himself) tries to reclaim his old flame, a former militant leftist, from her husband while being tracked by a detective (and providing drugs to the detective's addicted wife). With its crisp, taut style, its implacable rhythm, its laconic violence, this is a virtuoso exercise in tragic film noir.
