The Trip to Tilsit (Die Reise nach Tilsit)

One of the most interesting rediscoveries of recent years, this sound version of Sudermann's novel is not exactly a remake of Murnau's classic Sunrise, but in many ways is closer to it than the source novel. More realistic in setting, less "timeless" than Sunrise, it is still a very handsomely made and beautifully photographed film. Presumably it has been kept under wraps because of the notoriety now attached to Veit Harlan and his Nazi-designed version of Jew Suss. Considering when it was made, it is remarkably free of propaganda content. In fact, its only nod to possible Nazi-approval is in establishing that "The Woman from the City" is from across the border, and is actually Polish! It was one of the last German films of Fritz Van Dongen, who escaped to Hollywood and as Phillip Dorn appeared in the anti-Nazi Underground, shown August 15. William K. Everson
