Truly Human
The eighteenth Dogme film is an offbeat, sobering fable about a true innocent-part Chauncey Gardiner, part Kaspar Hauser. Appearing seemingly out of nowhere, lacking language, skills, or instincts, an oddball adolescent is placed in the care of the Danish welfare state; enthralled by his new life, he seems not to notice the dreariness of modern Copenhagen. The Dogme hallmarks-no–frills naturalism, outbursts of naked emotion-are here, but if there's no pixie dust in this fairy tale, there's certainly a moral: Don't underestimate your children.
