Ulrike Marie Meinhof
In the early seventies the name Ulrike Meinhof struck fear in the heart, for it was in this incendiary period of European history that the Baader-Meinhof group, the revolutionary wing of the Red Army Faction, terrorized Germany with a rash of deadly bombings. A childhood friend, director Koulmasis tries to divine some reason for Meinhof's transformation from committed anti-nuke activist, to influential political journalist, and finally to armed guerrilla. In early TV interviews, Meinhof comes off as a strong-willed thinker, never hedging with her criticism of Germany's political inequities. But the recollections of former friends and comrades summons a very different figure, one much more indecisive and yearning for acceptance. Koulmasis's incisive documentary shows us the ticking time bomb at the core of this most perplexing rebel. Winner of the Prix Europa and the FIPA d'Argent.
