The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

With the recent rerelease of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort, Jacques Demy is again being recognized for his unique contribution to cinema, including films that are not precisely musicals but rather where the dialogue is sung. "Demy's romanticism, clearly defined in such famous works as Lola, Bay of Angels, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and The Young Girls of Rochefort, has given each of these films a distinct personality and lyricism that is uniquely gentle and stylized. Attracted to atmospheres, he embellishes his works with the presence of the sea, and at the heart of every narrative beats the pulse of American musical traditions."(AJ) The Umbrellas of Cherbourg represents the peak of Demy's career, and of his associations with Catherine Deneuve and composer Michel Legrand, who, like Demy, was the subject of a Film Festival tribute.
