A Love Story unfolds in a “closed universe,” the interior of a house on the outskirts of Barcelona. There, a novelist and his pregnant wife are visited by the wife's sister and a triangle develops. Grau notes, “Generally, ‘love stories' are stories of egotism or sexual attraction, more or less idealized. In those...the one thing that does not exist is love. In my film, underneath a superficially sentimental relationship...exists a drama that is original precisely for its abundance of love, an impossible love, already containing physical contact, yet with the most absolute separation.”
