The Unapproachable (Die Unerreichbare)

"The Unapproachable is a fascinating chamber film for three actors about various ways of deceiving. Made in West Germany in English by Polish director Krzysztof Zanussi, it is full of lies, half truths, misconceptions, ruses and misapprehensions and continually surprises and amuses with its twists. The 'Unapproachable' of the title is a former film star (Caron), now a recluse in a luxury villa, whose privacy is invaded by a young man (Webb) who may be a student of art history. He gets in by pretending to have been beaten up and demanding to use the phone to call the police. Once inside, what he appears to be continually shifts under the questioning of the actress and it's hard to decide whether he's more interested in Canaletto or Caron. Perhaps he wants both but then perhaps the Canaletto is as much of a fake as he is. It's all very puzzling but fun, with excellent acting all round including English actress Leslie Malton as the maid. Zanussi based the script on two short stage plays he co-authored." --London Film Festival, 1982
