Undergrads and Underdogs: Stories of Individuals and Community

These documentaries by UC Berkeley undergraduates in anthropology and film studies range from intimate character studies to portraits of individuals dealing with social and political issues in their communities. Breaking Loose the Reins (Anna Camp, Jennifer Looney, 12 mins) depicts a young woman coping with a tragic accident. An Exercise in Denial (Aaron Schmidt, 6 mins) glimpses a day in the life of a Telegraph Avenue celebrity, while The Ebony Mama Herself (Zeon D.V. Kitchiner, Marianne Laleuf, Violeta Foregger, 12 mins) investigates the exuberant life of a transgender drag performer. In Tested (Michael Wilkerson, 8 mins, DVD), a student overcomes his fear of a test that could change his life. A French-born Berkeley Republican offers his take on war with Iraq in Amaury par Gaïa et Justine (Justine Jones, Gaïa Bidat, 6 mins), while An Account of March (Naoya Kaneta, Yuki Kawal, 6 mins) asks fundamental questions about peace in times of turmoil. Uproot | Root Down (Wun Yip, Sarah Pauly, 12 mins) and (in)visibility (Sara Gambin, Marissa Hill, Lea Jones, 15 mins) both deal with complex issues of housing in the Bay Area.
