Underground
Introduced by Larry Bensky Larry Bensky is National Affairs Correspondent for Pacifica Radio. The FBI dossier on Emile de Antonio was already considerable before he began working on Underground; he had caught the eye of the feds with earlier films about the McCarthy era and the Kennedy assassination. An extraordinary exercise in guerrilla filmmaking, Underground describes the revolutionary history of the Weather Underground, a radical organization held responsible for a series of politically inspired bombings. The film includes interviews with Billy Ayers, Kathy Boudin, Bernadine Dohrn, Jeff Jones, and Cathy Wilkerson, all fugitives wanted by the FBI. Absolute secrecy was observed in the making of Underground with special measures taken not to reveal incriminating information. Nevertheless, the FBI caught wind of the project and the filmmakers were subpoenaed to appear before the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles and bring the film materials. A statement of support was signed by forty-six industry supporters-including Jon Voight, Warren Beatty, Elia Kazan, Jack Nicholson, Arthur Penn and Henry Jaglom-and the three collaborators, de Antonio, Lampson and Wexler, declined in court to acknowledge anything beyond the factual existence of the project.
