The Unholy Three and The Road to Mandalay
The Unholy Three
“The Unholy Three is, justifiably, one of Tod Browning and Lon Chaney's most celebrated collaborations. The story concerns a ventriloquist (Chaney), a midget and a strong man who work as a team robbing mansions, only to find that their most dangerous enemies are themselves. A similar story was done by Browning two years earlier as The White Tiger, but it lacks the sheer wierdness of Chaney's performance in drag to be as successful. Chaney's only talking film, made in 1930 without Browning, was a scene-for-scene remake of The Unholy Three with only minor changes in the story to accomodate his voice, which proved to be nearly as versatile as his face. A peculiar spin-off of the story was the 1932 Mascot serial, The Shadow of the Eagle with John Wayne!” Jon Mirsalis
