Unstable Materials
Jü;rgen Reble was first introduced to Bay Area audiences through the films he made with the collective Schmelzdahin, which was active from 1975 to 1990. Reble's films are characterized by the artist's beautiful and unique alchemical transformations of the film material itself, achieved by melting away images by organic and chemical means. His most recent film "is made up of eight parts, based on the contemporary model of the elementary particles (neutron, photon, graviton, pion, electron, nucleon, meson, and baryon). The film's content is above all made up of forms resulting from the direct contact of sodium chloride crystals and colored materials on the emulsion. The compositions were done on an optical printer. The crystals' constantly changing structures, enriched by the textures, bring about an almost tactile experience. The tones of gongs and stones, reworked electronically by Thomas Koner, resonate with this rich film exploration, a visual expression of its own base matter." (Light Cone catalog)
