Urban Peasants
Perhaps(my wife) Flo's imaginative thrift-shop wardrobe prompted her AuntStella's dinner invitations. (O)ne day-saying, "can you make copiesof these?"-she pulled out a frozen stack of 16mm black-and-whitefilm! Home movies, of course, that she wanted preserved on fresh filmfor her sons. The departure I eventually made (with Stella's permission)of this extraction from the frozen depths is the brutally titled UrbanPeasants. I chose not to follow the carefully penned chronology, butinstead connected uncut one-hundred-foot rolls picked at random, afterwards slightly trimming the chance-beginning and chance-end. Iprinted the "climactic" Prospect Park picnic scene (thepeasants amongst Nature) in sepia. I also chose to confine events toBrooklyn of the thirties and forties (when, as you know, a quarter-spinof the globe away, similar innocents were having hell visited uponthem). Images alternate with "Situation number 3: When You Go to aHotel" and "Situation number 8: When You Are in Trouble,"in their entireties, from the instructional LP, "InstantYiddish." --Ken Jacobs (excerpted)
