Validating Existence: Experimental Works

Curated by Brenda Jean Grell and Karen SchwartzArtists in PersonTonight's program celebrates artistic production on the UC Berkeley campus. From lyrical, meditative pieces to experiments with found footage, these works, in their diversity of styles, moods, and content, invite the viewer to delight in expanding the language of motion pictures, as well as to take pleasure in the aesthetics and fun of day-to-day life. Themes include sexual identity (K.I.P. and I (heart) GWB), everyday activities (Hair Cut and Sweat Pants), and personal history as informed by culture (Before the Pale People). Along with complex, intriguing content, the artists explore the relationship between sound and image through the use of newer digital technology as well as older VHS and Super 8. There will be live performances accompanying two pieces. Featured works come from the Film Studies Program (classes taught by Ernie Gehr, Michael Sicinski, Brett Simon) and the Art Practice Department (Kevin Radley). The curators: Karen Schwartz is a senior in the Film Studies Program. Brenda Jean Grell is a junior majoring in art and women's studies.
