Vaudeville
In Jean Marboeuf's “vaudeville” act, the cast of characters include a loyal husband, a faithful wife and a playboy lover. Tonight the curtain rises as the players tire of their roles. Gaston has been married to Madeleine for twenty years. He'd like to switch parts with Victor, his bachelor co-worker at a department store. Victor, weary of his swinging lifestyle, would prefer Gaston's stability. Gaston's brother is married to Yvette, an unfaithful, younger wife--a part that appeals to Madeleine. As they try out their new parts, the players discover that it's not so easy to change characters and leave familiar roles.
On its showing at the Montreal Film Festival, Variety reviewer David Stratton commented, “It's the discovery of an unheralded little gem like Vaudeville that makes festival-going worthwhile...Vaudeville is quietly amusing throughout, with sharp dialogue, wry situations and a bitter-sweet mood that doesn't cloy but which reveals a lot about the sexual hang-ups of its quintet of characters.”
