Verboten

Perhaps the most explicitly chaotic of Fuller's war films, Verboten describes an American soldier who marries a German girl whose brother and former boyfriend are leaders of a German youth neo-Nazi movement.
In interviews, Fuller speaks of how few Germans, after the war, admitted to any Nazi sympathies. This is the basis for Verboten's suggestion that, in fact, most Germans remained loyal to Hitler's cause. The American soldier's simple love is no match at all for the animal fury and viciousness evoked by dreams of grandeur and dominance. Verboten may be taken almost as a naive child's coming of age.
Hysteria is Verboten's major motif. Intercutting documentary footage with movie studio set-ups; mingling long-take scenes with rapid montage sequences; fluctuating between Beethoven and Wagner on the soundtrack, Verboten points to a world truly gone berserk.
