The Verdict

Siegel's first feature film is, oddly enough, a murder mystery set in fog-bound Victorian London, starring Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre (“the Laurel and Hardy of the criminal world, in a pleasingly civilised duel of wits” --NFT). Still, themes that were to become typical of Siegel can be espied: the story is of a detective, dismissed from Scotland Yard for his part in the hanging of an innocent man, who sets out independently to secure a reprieve for an MP he considers to have been wrongly accused of murder. “Thematically, there is the relationship between the two men (Lorre and Greenstreet), the older man educating the younger; stylistically, there is (Siegel's) narrative control and the feeling for background atmosphere.” --NFT
