A Very Moral Night (Egy Erkolcsos Ejszaka)

The most recent film by one of Hungary's master directors, Karoly Makk (whose Love, made in 1970, was widely shown in this country), A Very Moral Night deals with the situation of a poor medical student, lodging cheaply in a bordello, who learns that his mother is coming to visit him. What happens when the “madame” and the girls try to convert the place into a respectable house is given a certain de Maupassant flavor by Makk who concentrates mainly on re-creating, in fastidious detail, the physical look and feel of the bordello with its complement of striving, yearning girls and bellicose customers. The casting, decor and photographic richness compensate for certain script cliches towards the end.
