Vibrator
A guy, a girl, and a truck: three simple ingredients make up this work of rare tenderness, humor, and sensuality. Rei is buying convenience store liquor for her regular evening's self-medication. Okabe wanders into the store for a few supplies, and Rei can't take her eyes off of him. “Tasty,” she thinks-and we know what she thinks, because Vibrator offers us a prismatic window into her soul: the words she speaks, a few flashbacks, her thoughts in voiceover, plus a running text of all that stuff she wishes she could say out loud but only says to herself. She's lonely, bulimic (“sort of a hobby,” she explains), and yearning for...something. And so she jumps into his truck, and they head up into the wintry north on his delivery route. The rest of the film unfolds in that truck: they talk while he's driving, make love while he's not. They tell stories about themselves-some true, some not-and chatter on the CB with other lost souls out on the road, as the truck thrums through gorgeous, snowy northern Japan. It's as simple, and as complex, as that: two strangers getting to know each other. Is there anything better than that?
