Learning to Talk:
“For a year I sat in front of a video camera and recorded gestures, faces, accents, voices, so that I could work on an old fear - an inability to talk. I had photographd myself years earlier as different characters but out of the subsequent work came eight different personalities who talk about themselves and rave about their actions in life. I have structured these characters around the Yoga Chakra or energy systems: Chakra 1: Sex... Lamar Breton, French woman. Chakra 2: Security... Sister Rose Augustine, Missionary. Chakra 3: Courage... Kay Pryor, Jazz Singer. Chakra 4: Love... Linda Lee, Country Western Singer. Chakra 5: Communication... Dr. Jane Gooding, Neurosurgeon. Chakra 6: Intuition... Nadia Grozmolov, Russian Dancer. Chakra 7: Bliss... Hilda Mahler, Karate Black Belt.”

Mitchell's Death:
“My ex-husband died suddenly and tragically on August 19, 1977, and his death shocked and numbed me; I audio- and videotaped my grief and mourned him in my work. In this tape, I chant the events of his death; acupuncture needles are in my face.”
