Viktor-Viktoria

Reinhold Schuenzel's Viktor-Viktoria provided the basis for several later films--Victor Saville's 1935 First a Girl, with Jessie Matthews; the French Georges et Georgette; and Blake Edwards' recent Victor/Victoria, with Julie Andrews. But the original was itself one of the biggest commercial hits of the 1930s, featuring the sparkling talents of Renate Mueller and the elegant Adolf Wohlbrueck (Anton Wolbrook). The comedy of sexual confusion concerns an aging female impersonator who hires a young woman to take his place as “Viktoria,” only to have the new Viktoria become an international sensation. Composer Franz Doelle was one of Germany's most popular composers of stage and screen operettas. The Blake Edwards film was closely based on the 1933 original, and to viewers who know that film even some of the dance numbers will seem familiar. Note: Although the film is in German with no English subtitles, a detailed written English synopsis will be provided.
