MGM-British produced this little film that turned out to be the sleeper of the year 1960. The decidedly unnerving tale is set in the small English village of Midwich, where twelve women mysteriously give birth to almost identical children--all flaxen-haired mental giants with penetrating eyes and telepathic powers. George Sanders portrays the physicist father of one such child, David, chillingly played by young Martin Stephens, who makes a simple line like “Father, I want to talk to you...” all too memorable. This sinister horror film gave new life to the science fiction genre, according to Parish and Pitts in The Great Science Fiction Pictures. In any case, coming on the cusp of the so-called tranquil fifties and the turbulent sixties, it is fascinating in its depiction of the eerie side of domesticity, and does not bode well for the generation-gap to come.
