A Village Tale

“Although crucified by the authors of the recent history of RKO Radio, A Village Tale would seem to be more a case of a film out of its time, searching for a nonexistent audience. Its title and author, Phil Stong (whose State Fair has since been a huge hit) suggest a charming piece of Americana. Instead it's a rather savage precursor of Peyton Place and Le Corbeau! We'll say no more about it since surprise is one of its major assets, but it does remind us that John Cromwell--best known for his emotional and marital studies--could occasionally, and successfully, invade Clouzot territory.” William K. Everson
