Virtual Worlds-Beyond the Screen: Mark Pesce

A consortium of three Bay Area museums hosts "Virtual Worlds: Beyond the Screen," a lecture series showcasing renowned artists, scientists, and theorists who have pioneered interactive art forms, multimedia technologies, and new perspectives on the digital age. The 1997 season explores the medium of virtual reality and the dissolution of spatial boundaries in cyberspace. PFA is pleased to present Mark Pesce, author, theorist, and co-founder of VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) as part of this cooperative series. Pesce is widely recognized as one of today's leading visionaries dedicated to expanding the web beyond the two-dimensional perspective. A cartographer of cyberspace, Pesce co-authored the first version of VRML, opening the door for web developers to create their own virtual communities. In 1995 he published VRML: Browsing and Building in Cyberspace, a book which expanded his reputation as a theorist of web-culture and design.
