"The surprise success of this film caused Paramount to purchase and ultimately film The Covered Wagon, so indirectly it can be considered an early launching pad for the Epic westerns that began in 1923. Although contractually it refers to Thomas Ince's 'supervision,' all of the Artcraft Harts were made with total autonomy by Hart's stock crew and players. By now he was slowing down his pace a little, and this is a story of brooding revenge as much as it is of action, but one can see that Hart means--and believes in--every word of it! William K. Everson
