Waterloo Road

"If Terrence Rattigan was Britain's wartime chronicler in the theatre, then Launder and Gilliat played the same role for the movies in films like this one and Millions Like Us. Although war-oriented, Waterloo Road is essentially a home-front story, a tight and suspenseful tale about an anxious soldier (Mills) deserting from the army to check on whether or not his wife (Shelton) is being unfaithful with draft-dodger Granger. At the time British critics crowed over the climactic fistic battle between the two males, which they somehow felt put Hollywood in the shade! It's a good enough fight certainly, but it is the warmth and observation of the wartime scene that makes the film such a valuable record." -William K. Everson
