We Who Remain

One of a series of newsreel-style documentaries on postwar Jewish life that wereevidently the first films made in Poland after the war, We Who Remain is afascinating survey of the scene. Apart from a ballet mécanique celebrationof "productivization," it focuses entirely on a broad range of Jewishculture, from holiday celebrations to the dance of Felix Fibich and Judith Berg,Fania Rubina's songs of the Warsaw Ghetto, an exhibition of paintings depictingthe Uprising, and of course Yiddish theater, with Ida Kaminska et al. In thespirit of socialist-realism, the film looks forward with optimism. (Notes basedon material in J. Hoberman, Bridge of Light)
