West Side Story
"West Side Story contains Leonard Bernstein's most widely known popular songs. Yet, as a film score, the composition is a sophisticated blend of 'complicated musical styles-totally chromatic fugues ("Cool"), irregularly sprung rhythms ("Scherzo"), dissonant countermelodies ("A Boy Like That")-and more unconventional musical structures-octatonic scales ("The Rumble"), polymetric phrasings ("Tonight Ensemble"), non-32-bar songs ("Maria"), etc. For Broadway it was truly an ambitious undertaking.' (Sennetts and Tuckets, A Bernstein Celebration)" --Bernstein Tribute, Mary Pickford Theater, Library of Congress
