Where Are My Children?
Lois Weber directed, wrote, produced and starred in films from the teens through the thirties. Film historian Anthony Slide commented, "I doubt that Lois Weber ever wrote or directed a film in whose subject matter she did not believe." Once a street-corner evangelist, she found film the perfect medium for her social beliefs, commenting, "Now I can preach to my heart's content. And with the opportunity to write the play, act the leading roles, and direct the entire production, if my message fails to reach someone, I can blame only myself." Her films took on such topics as divorce, racism, and capital punishment. Where Are My Children? is particularly intriguing for its strange blend of social commentary and ideology. Its story of a childless District Attorney and his wife manages to advocate birth control (as a form of eugenics for the poor) while condemning abortion (as "race suicide" for the upper classes). The film was banned in Pennsylvania as "unspeakably vile," which may have contributed to its financial success. Please note that no complete prints of this film exist. -Kathy Geritz
