Where Now Are the Dreams of Youth?

Of four graduating college classmates, one becomes a "tycoon" on the death of his father and the other three must turn to him to find jobs. In return, he gets one of their girlfriends. Planned and shot in the interim when an injury forced a halt to filming I Was Born, But..., this is in some ways a sequel to the interrupted work as well as to I Flunked, But... "Like most of Ozu's early silents, Where Now Are the Dreams of Youth uses some splendid comic routines as a veneer for deep concerns about the effects of the Great Depression. Though Donald Richie considers this one of Ozu's less successful films, Tadao Sato praised it, saying it suffered only by comparison with the masterpiece I Was Born, But... which had in fact prompted its creation."
