Wild Orchids

Wild Orchids enjoys the virtues of the great Garbo silents--an exotic setting (Java), evocative photography by William Daniels, and stylish production values from MGM. It is unusual in that it is a drama with only three characters: a wretched American (Lewis Stone) who is blind to his young wife's beauty and sexuality; the wife (Garbo), and a sleek Javanese prince (Nils Asther). The hothouse triangle is played out against a steamy, tropical background, with genuine heat and tension in the acting and verisimilitude provided by documentary footage of Javanese dancers. (CORRECTION: costumes and dances are more like those of Samoa or Fiji, not authentic Javanese)
